San Antonio Children's Museum

© SACVB/Al Rendon - San Antonio Children's MuseumThe San Antonio Children's Museum is a great destination for San Antonio preschoolers to learn, explore and play with other children.

This interactive museum, located in downtown San Antonio, offers permanent exhibits, storytimes, arts and crafts activities and much more.

The museum contains nearly 100 interactive exhibits for children. Birthday parties can also be arranged in private party rooms on site.

Advantages for Preschoolers

The Tot Spot
This is a special area at the museum just for children under five years old. Preschoolers can build with oversized blocks, mold with clay and particpate in other interactive museum activities.

FETCH!
Every Saturday from noon to 4:00pm, kids can do craft projects and basic science experiments in Leo's Lab. The museum provides all the instructions, supervision and materials.

Reading Adventures - Weekly Storytime
Each Wednesday from 10:30am - 11:30am, the museum has a special storytime program with preschoolers in mind. Kids will enjoy books, puppet shows, songs and finger plays.

Disadvantages of the Children's Museum

Museum Closing Time
The San Antonio Children's Museum closes early on Sunday - it's open only from noon to 4:00pm. Many San Antonio parents and caregivers take their children out on the weekends. Therefore, you would think that the museum would consider that fact and extend the hours.

Museum Admission
The admission price to enter the museum is $6.95 per person. If you take your preschoolers often, the cost can really add up. They do have a $60 annual membership, where you can get unlimited free admission for one year for two adults and all their children, ages 18 and younger. So if you are going to be visiting the museum more than a few times a year, consider buying the membership.

Museum Parking
The museum doesn't provide onsite parking and parking downtown is often a hassle. They validate for one hour of free parking the Houston Street Garage, Riverbend Garage and St. Mary's Garage. However, most preschoolers and their families spend at least 3-4 hours at the museum, so you will spend money out of your pocket and then have to walk from the garage to the museum. If you choose to park at the metered parking on the streets in the area, the maximum parking time is two hours.
